30 Museums. 3 Rivers. 1 Shared History
The Tri-River Historical Museum Network is a consortium of 30+ small museums and historical societies across Barry, Eaton, Ionia, Kent, and Montcalm counties, centered along Michigan’s Grand, Flat, and Thornapple Rivers.
Our museums highlight local history — from Native American heritage and the pioneer era to the industrial age — offering programs for all ages: engaging field trips for schoolchildren, eye-opening exhibits for visitors, and nostalgic experiences for seniors.
We host an annual luncheon with featured talks on topics like women’s suffrage in Michigan, Rosie the Riveter’s WWII legacy, and the cultural history of food.
Our signature event, Spring Into the Past, is a free open-house weekend each May, where all member museums welcome the public. In 2021, this program was honored with the State History Award from the Historical Society of Michigan in the Special Programs/Events category, recognizing its outstanding contribution to public history.
We produce a colorful directory of information that is available in all museums. A smaller museum brochure is distributed in many of the Michigan Welcome Centers. Both proudly carry the Pure Michigan logo.
Founded in 2002 by six small museums looking to support each other, the network has grown into a thriving alliance of about 30 members, many housed in unique spaces like historic depots, churches, and town halls. Monthly meetings at member sites foster shared ideas, upcoming events, and joint activities that strengthen the entire group.
